May 1-5 this year in Ontario is Catholic Education Week. To mark this important week in Catholic Education, St. Matthew School will host our first ever school art show, called the “Spring Into Art Show”, on Thursday, May 4th between 6:30 and 8:00 p.m.
The event is sponsored by our Catholic School Council PRO Grant, in collaboration with Markham’s very own Varley Art Gallery. Within the last three weeks, Varley artists will have visited each classroom at St. Matthew, to teach students to use various artistic media, forms and techniques, to create their own works of art for our school Art Show. As well, our students are also being invited to showcase their musical talents at the Show. For more information, please refer to the invitation/flyer that was sent home last Friday, April 21st (see below).
We will be exploring two important themes in our art productions: “Canada 150”, celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary as a nation, and “Walking Forward Together”. The latter theme has its roots in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission between Canada’s aboriginal peoples and the Government of Canada. In the spirit of reconciliation, forgiveness, understanding and unity, the theme of Walking Forward Together was also put forward and accepted by the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario, as the theme of Catholic Education Week this year.
As was mentioned above, an invitation/flyer for the Spring Into Art Show was sent home on Friday, April 21st. It will also be sent again via SynreVoice e-mail within the next couple of days. Please mark your calendars for this event and plan to attend. Our staff and students are looking forward to hosting you, our families, as we gather to celebrate the gifts and talents of our wonderful students here at St. Matthew School! We hope to see you there.
