The Holy Season of Lent

The Church Liturgical Season we are about to enter is the Holy Season of Lent, the time of preparation for Easter. Easter comes early this year, on Sunday, April 1st, with  Holy Week taking place between March 26-30.

Lent is an old English word meaning spring, and refers to the lengthening of the days in the springtime. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday, March 29th.

Our spiritual journey through Lent comes to its high point in Holy Week, when we commemorate Jesus’ passion, crucifixion and death on the cross on Good Friday—March 30th.  Holy Week liturgies help to prepare us for the joyous  celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead on Easter Sunday morning.
